Overview
IBM XIV is a high-end disk storage system designed to provide consistent, hotspot-free performance and five-nines1 availability alongside exceptional ease of use. As virtualized storage that meshes tightly with hypervisors, XIV offers optimal agility for cloud and virtualized environments.
Self-optimizing, with built-in efficiencies that simplify storage, XIV delivers the benefits of IBM Smarter Storage for Smarter Computing, empowering organizations to take control of their storage and to extract more valuable insights from their data. XIV is also supported as a high performance enterprise storage offering of the IBM PureFlex System, a single pre-integrated infrastructure system that offers simplicity, control, efficiency, and agility.
Highlights
The rapidly-accepted XIV Storage System series has thousands of installations worldwide, including in financial services, healthcare, energy, education, and manufacturing. IBM XIV integrates easily with virtualization, email, database, analytics, data protection, and other solutions from Microsoft, IBM, SAP, Oracle, SAS, VMware, Symantec and other leading providers. With its massively parallel grid architecture, XIV is recognized as an ideal platform for cloud computing and virtualized environments.
The XIV Gen3 model offers 3 TB drives, providing up to 243 TB of usable capacity per rack¡ªbringing excellent price-performance value to a single floor tile. SSD caching (available as an option) adds up to 6 TB of management-free caching power to the whole array, providing up to three times the performance for active application workloads*¡ªwithout the need for setup, administration, or migration policies.
Unleashing the Power of the Architecture: XIV Gen3 design gives applications a tremendous performance boost over previous models and provides the high reliability that businesses require in today's demanding environment:
¡¤ Up to four times the throughput, cutting time and boosting performance for business intelligence, archiving, and other extremely demanding applications
¡¤ Up to three times speedier response time, enabling faster transaction processing and greater scalability with OLTP, databases, and email applications
¡¤ Gives additional boost of up to three times with IBM XIV SSD Caching (optional), accelerating access to data from all applications with zero management, at a fraction of typical SSD storage costs*
¡¤ Power to serve more applications from a single system, utilizing InfiniBand intermodule connect, large cache, fast disk controllers, high processing power, and abundant FC and iSCSI connectivity
¡¤ Robust disk rebuild mechanism uses all system disks, completing a 3 TB drive rebuild in approximately 50 minutes with minimal impact on system service
¡¤ Simple remote mirroring supported between XIV Gen3 and the XIV Storage System, offering flexibility for meeting data protection goals
Feature |
Benefits |
Distributed highly paralleled architecture |
¡¤ Provides excellent hotspot-free consistent performance with self-tuning through full exploitation of system resources, including disks, RAM, central processing units (CPUs), cache, optional SSD caching and switches, combined with unique caching algorithms |
Active-active with N+1 redundancy |
¡¤ Ensures highest levels of reliability with redundancy of all system components and through rapid rebuild times. Also: UPS hardware protection, redundant power supply and fans; concurrent multipath host connectivity support; remote mirroring between models of different generations; nondisruptive code, hardware, and firmware upgrades |
Easy storage management |
¡¤ Dramatically reduces storage administration and overhead by virtualizing storage, automating balancing, capacity utilization, and complex tasks. Planned future support of IPv6*, a highly intuitive GUI, centralized administration of up to 81 systems, powerful CLI, and management tools. The IBM XIV Mobile Dashboard brings unprecedented flexibility with anytime performance and capacity monitoring from the Apple iPhone® and Apple iPad® |
Wide host and application interoperability |
Multiplatform support including:
¡¤ OS: Microsoft Windows Server 2003 - 2008, IBM AIX, SUSE Linux Enterprise Server, Red Hat Enterprise Linux, Oracle Solaris, HP-UX, and IBM iSeries (via ViOS)
¡¤ Server virtualization platforms: VMware ESX/ESXi, Microsoft Hyper-V, and IBM PowerVM
¡¤ Storage virtualization platforms such as: IBM SAN Volume Controller (SVC) and IBM ViOS
¡¤ Databases such as: Oracle (9i-11g), IBM DB2, Microsoft SQL Server, Sybase, Informix, MySQL
¡¤ Enterprise applications such as: Oracle BI, Oracle EBS, SAP, SAS, Microsoft Exchange, and Microsoft SharePoint
¡¤ Storage management platforms: IBM Tivoli and Symantec Veritas Storage Foundation
¡¤ Archive de-duplication: ProtecTIER
Support for multipathing with Symantec Veritas and operating system native multipathing drivers and for clusters with Symantec Veritas and operating system native clustering |
Linear scaling |
¡¤ Fully scalable in all key elements, including disk capacity, interfaces, cache, SSD caching (optional), CPU power, and internal bandwidth, enabling system performance to grow proportionally to capacity; XIV automatic load balancing immediately acts to incorporate the new modules in the system-wide data distribution scheme. |
